Order discounts or coupons are discounts that a customer can add to their order. When added and applied by the customer the order total will have the discount applied to the order total.

Adding/managing the coupons:

  • Go to WooCommerce > Coupons
  • Select an existing coupon or add a new one on the coupon listing page
  • Under the Coupon data block, and the general tab:
    • Discount types:
      • Cart discount: this deducts the value added from the total cart amount
      • Cart % discount: this deducts a percentage value from the cart
      • Product discount: this deducts the value from a specific product only
      • Product % discount: this deducts a percentage value from a specific product
    • Coupon amount: This refers to the % discount, or the actual value (in Rands) of the discount to be applied
    • Allow free shipping: Check this box if the coupon grants free shipping. The free shipping method must be enabled with the “must use coupon” setting.
    • Apply before tax: Check this box if the coupon should be applied before calculating cart tax.
    • Coupon expiry date: This is the date at which the coupon expires. After this date the coupon will no longer have a value.
  • Under the Usage Restriction tab:
    • In this tab the restrictions of the coupon can be added, including only allowing the coupon to work for specific products or categories.
    • The minimum spend box, ensures that a customer spends a minimum amount before the coupon can be applied.
    • Individual use: this ensure that only one coupon can be used per order.
    • Exclude sale items: excludes any items on sale.
    • Under this are the product and category exclusions. Hover over the ? on each of these lines for more detail on these.
  • Under the Usage Limits tab:
    • Usage limit per coupon: The maximum amount of times a coupon can be used for all customers
    • Usage limit per user: The number of times a coupon can be used per customer
  • Once all the information has been added/updated the coupon can be published
